Through our Journey to Parenthood series, we are exploring various paths to parenthood and the journey of parenthood itself. Showing different perspectives of how there is never a straight-forward route and being a stay at home Mum is a reality for many.

There are twists and turns that many of our Dribble Community have been brave enough to share with us. There are some exceptional and inspiring stories in the series and we hope they bring comfort, understanding and acceptance to you, and maybe even open you to alternative experiences, as you hear what other parents have to say.

We are continuing with our story series hearing from Emma who was a personal assistant to a Managing Director before her maternity leave. A job she decided not to return to and instead to become a Stay at Home Mum to her now 10.5-month-old son, Grayson. She also shares how she turned to Instagram to give her a distraction and how she has since created her successful account @thescottslife. Read her story below…

stay at home mum

Becoming a Stay at Home Mum is not an easy option, like many people believe it to be. As soon as Grayson was born, I knew that I couldn’t leave him when he was a tiny 9-month-old, put him in nursery and go back to my 9-5 desk job! I mean how could I leave him? Have someone else see my boy reach all his milestones? See him grow and develop on a daily basis? While I sat at a desk….it broke my heart even thinking about it! On top of all that have you seen the cost of private childcare?! I would literally be working for free to give someone else my wage to watch my boy!?

So, after a few chats with my partner, we both came to decision that what would be best for us and our family is if I was to be a stay at home mum. Now don’t get me wrong, I had rose tinted glasses on in the beginning thinking YES, no more work! I can go shopping, meet with friends, have lunch dates and coffee dates and we can sit all nice with our babies…. Boy was I wrong!

You forget that your friends are all at work, or you child isn’t playing ball today and has made leaving the house a military mission that you just are NOT prepared for! I thought that being a full-time mum would be amazing and fun and if I’m begin truthful, I actually found being a stay at home Mum to be very lonely!

Now I’ve been in bad places before with my mental health and I know how to stop myself going back to that place again, so I made a point of every single day getting out with Grayson, be that to our classes, a walk, a coffee somewhere with anyone who was available just literally anything to get out of those 4 walls in the house!

I found all the free classes so good because you could go along try them out and if you/baby didn’t like them then there was no harm! I’ve literally done every and all classes in the area and loved them all! I’m so glad I got out and did them because I’ve made some great friends round me who have similar aged babies to Grayson.

Now I never expected it to come to anything but it has opened up a whole new world of opportunities for me, I’ve made and met online friends, who I feel like I’ve known for years! I think if it wasn’t for them keeping me sane on a daily basis, I’d be rocking in the corner singing ‘small potatoes’ over and over!

Now being a stay at home mum isn’t for everyone and I know that and some can’t afford it and some just do not want to spend 24/7 with their child…but for us it’s what works best and I feel lucky every day that my partner is able to support us to do daily activities and stay at home together.
